Newborn Essentials: First 3 Months

My theory is less is more. My goal is to have a house that doesn't look like a an episode of Hoarders, Baby Edition.

Car Seat & Stroller
What I love about the Britax is that it's super easy and convenient. You will obviously need a car seat and stroller - when we purchased ours, there was a promotion of getting the car seat for free. If you know you'll have more than one nugget - I suggest the B-Ready. The B-Ready holds a toddler seat AND nestles the car seat underneath. What's great is that it is NOT wide, I can't tell you how many mom's I see struggling to get their double wide strollers through doors and aisles. If you only need a one-seat stroller, the B-Agile will work great!

Layette Shirt
Uuuuhh, the bottom snaps! It just stinks to have to unsnap a onesie in the middle of the night. Our newborn lived in these shirts for the first 3 months.

Swaddle Blanket and/or Muslin Swaddle Blankets
You can't have loose blankets and I could never get an actual swaddle tight enough. However, if you can manage it, Muslin swaddle blankets are highly recommended because babies tend to over heat, and muslin is a breathable fabric.

Pack and Play
This was perfect for us! We chose not to buy a bassinet along with a crib. The  removable "Cuddle Cove Rocking Seat" was all our baby needed and made it incredibly convenient to move around from room to room. We set up the pack and play in our bedroom - when our baby grew out of his rocking seat, we moved him to the higher level of the pack n' play then gradually moved him to his crib. You will also get a lot of use out of the play pen in later months.

OPTIONAL

Diaper Bag
Ya just gotta have one. No matter how minimal you'd like to be, you still have to shlep around quite a bit: diapers, bottles, multiple onesies, your breast cover, a toy, a blankie and whatever else you can jam in! If you don't want a diaper bag, you could just use a little Tupperware to hold your diapers, wet-wipes and a fold-up changing pad.

Breast Pump
You don't necessarily have to have one, but they are incredibly convenient! They can also help increase your milk supply.

Breast Feeding Cover
I hadn't noticed before, but LOVE the idea of having a breast cover that angles to the side. When you're breastfeeding, you really only need to cover 1 side at a time and it can get a little challenging when your baby starts grabbing. I understand that breastfeeding is natural and empowering and should be more publicly accepted, however I personally don't need my brothers, cousins, friends, mother-in-law... seeing my milk filled, enlarged nipple'd boob or becoming involuntary transfixed by the grotesque suction display of pumping (of which, can cause you and witnesses to go into a state of silent mortification)

Car Seat Canopy
No matter what the season, its good to have a car seat canopy - it will protect your baby vampire from the sun and also keep him warm during the winter.

Diapers & Wet Wipe Warmer
We (my husband and I) prefer pampers. It seemed like we had less "blow outs" and like the yellow line that turns green when it's time to change.
Any wet-wipe will do, unless your baby has sensitive skin. We did purchase a wet-wipe warmer. Those wet wipes can be shockingly cold for your newborn's toosh. You won't always need it, but I think it's nice to have for the first few weeks.

Diaper Pail
If your nursery is on a 2nd floor or even a few rooms from your garbage, you will want one. You will also want one when you baby's starts eating solids, trust me on this.

Baby Swing A great option to hold your little bundle of joy when your completely exhaustified.  The mirror and moving mobile will keep your baby entertained while you try and find time to go to the bathroom.

Baby Bath
Your little bundle could take a bath in the sink, but a baby bath makes it so much easier.  Bath time is also a natural and easy way to relax your fussy baby!

Books: Save Our Sleep & Be Prepared
Save Our Sleep gives great reasoning, perspective & advice, it's not for everyone - but I found it very helpful, especially as a working mom. Be Prepared is a fun advice book for new Dad's, my husband found it and has given it as gifts for his expecting friends.
